Preparing for a New Year

We are excited to see what God has in store for 2014! Pastor Flavio is praying about spending one time a week in three new places, Santa Teresa, Alto Dois Irmaos, and Belem (along with Cajueiro Claro and Mussurepe):

These three locations are very poor areas of Paudalho, and we already have some contacts and friendships with children established from when we used to have a Living Stones based at the Paudalho church. It will be wonderful to be able to provide them with needed services again!
Please pray for Pastor Flavio and Mercia as they follow God's will in 2014!

Book Lovers Children's Day

In August, we started a library at Living Stones Cajueiro Claro to help the children have access to books--fun books, interesting books, educational books. The books have seen the wear and tear that comes from children who live in mud homes and no shelves or desks. For Children's Day, we set up a special trip to Recife.
The children who had read the most books (and behaved...decently...) went to the big city (Cajueiro Claro pop. 1000 including all surrounding areas, Recife pop. 4 million) where the children looked out the window to count cars stuck in traffic and how many floors on the skyscrapers..."30? Why doesn't it fall over?"
We went to Old Recife and showed them the first Synagogue in North and South America, some new museums, and tourist traps
We then proceeded to the bookstore where each of the kids were told they could pick out any book (up to $20). Five of the six children chose Bibles. The sixth already owned a Bible and chose a daily devotional book. No arm twisting involved--this was their book of choice!
They also helped pick out books for the rest of the children in Cajueiro Claro to receive at church later that evening. Then food time!
Church was a record attendance, with every seat filled!
Lots of presents and special books for everyone
As well as special shirts
Thank you for giving!

Raising Funds

On Brazilian Independence Day, we had our second food tent to raise funds for Cajueiro Claro.
It was a wonderful time to meet up with friends
See the Living Stones children march in the parade
And $500USD was raised! With that money, paint was purchased to redo the church
And a big celebration dinner at church
Our next Cajueiro Campaign is to raise funds for a drum set and instruments for the worship team. If you would like to help out, you can donate at http://wribrazil.com/lsdonate/ and put in the comments that it is for the drums.

Gardening

Living Stones is working to help the families find self-sustainable options in their communities. Pastor Flavio is working on a number of ideas in Cajueiro Claro, to train the children, help the community, and raise money for the church/program itself.
He is working with some of the mothers who come for the soup ministry to start raising chickens. For Brazilian Independence day, he is challenging women in the community to have baked goods ready for our second barraca (food tent) at the city-wide parade. He has begun a cupcake business, selling at the restaurant that donates the soup to Living Stones.
"If I can make cupcakes work as a side business," Says Flavio to the women, "Then you can too."
At Vovo Bel's farm in Mussurepe, they have been growing lemons, breadfruit, and cilantro and then selling it at the farmers market (as well as eating it at the Living Stones program). A friend has also given a plot of ground to Flavio to use, to plant to sell/eat for Living Stones:
And so we have also been teaching the children about gardening:
It is amazing to see how few families in this rural community are taking advantage of the two growing seasons that Brazil tropical weather provides.
Each of the children received their own egg to plant/take care of their seeds until they grow enough to then plant outside. And then we ate an omelet:)
So glad to have Roland Zaleta, Carina Stahl, and Caid Ferguson come to help out!

Gravata

Since 2011, Pastor Flavio has been serving, once a month, in Gravata. This is a long overdue update on all that God is doing in this ministry.
Sports ministries with boys involved with drugs. Please pray that God would raise up more workers to re-begin this ministry!
Watching God bring together children that beg and children that don't.
Using the Kombi God blessed us with.
Bubble gum contests
Piece of land we are praying for being the future home of a church plant/Living Stones program

3 People Come to Jesus

These past couple of weeks, God has been blessing. First, a woman from the soup ministry in Cajueiro Claro accepted Christ. Second, the mother of two of the children in the Living Stones program, gave her life to the Lord. This last week, one more gave his life to the Lord.
We have been praying for this man (in the middle) for awhile now. His wife had rededicated her life to God some time back, and was actually so busy praying for her husband that she didn't see him go forward in the church service! Pastor Flavio is overjoyed: this is the first man saved through the ministry in Cajueiro Claro. "We have a ministry for children, for women, and now we can begin a ministry for the men." Were his words.

VBS

In June we had a group of American's from Morning Star Friends church come and put on vacation Bible school for the children in Cajueiro Claro and Mussurepe. In the afternoons, the second half of the group was in Carpina (Santo Antonio), running the same program. Over 100 children made new friends from around the world and heard about the good news of Jesus, in English and Portuguese.
Nothing bonds faster than some good ol' soccer.

They loved arts and crafts with "Grandma."
We had stories from the perspective of Mary and others from the Biblical time period, and great translation skills from Tyago.
Luana was also such a blessing to us! Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

New Tables

Special thanks to Bob, who came to Cajueiro Claro and helped us out with his super fixing skills and these amazing new tables for the children: our official cafeteria!
(Anginha, Eduarda's mom, our amazing cook!)
We so appreciate you, Bob, and the time you have invested! Hope you come back soon!

"What's all that Blue?"

For Living Stones Cajueiro Claro, we were learning basic geography. I brought a map, and the children held it and said "What's all that blue?"
"Water." I said, not knowing if I should laugh or cry. They had never seen a full map before. They learned where Brazil was. Where Indiana was. Where China and Africa are, and where Santa Clause would be, if he were...
For some reason, Brazilians love cold water. I have gotten used to lukewarm water because I am too lazy to put water in the fridge and wait for it to cool. But Pastor Flavio thought it would be really nice for the kids to have cold water--especially after a hot game of soccer. The church started saving up money for an electric water dispenser that cooled water.
Money wasn't coming in very quickly, but Pastor Flavio continued on. One night we had a visitor, who drank a cup of lukewarm water and said, "I want to donate an electric water dispenser to this church." Within a week, not only did we have cold water, but all the money needed for a second one came in--and was used to make our younger children's room absolutely perfect:
The only problem we have now is getting the kids to leave at the end of the service.

Mother's Day

While my mother wasn't able to stay for Mother's day, she brought special gifts to give to the mothers in Cajueiro Claro. We had 26 mothers come celebrate with us at church! We were bursting at the seams with children--what a blessing.

Mercia and the younger children also had a special presentation:
It was an amazing time of encouragement for the women who work so hard, and for the leaders to see the community really come together on this special day.

Easter Celebration

On March 25th, 8 students from the International school went to bring chocolate Easter eggs and help run our Easter celebration in Cajueiro Claro.

Over 50 children from the community, and many mothers, came to hear about Jesus and the sacrifice He gave.

After we celebrated together the original Passover and the significance of communion and Jesus's death and resurrection,
the children had an Easter egg hunt (with painted rocks, since they don't sell plastic eggs in Brazil) and meal.
Thank you so much for supporting Living Stones! Here is a video to show you better:
